What You Need to Know About Roof Damage and Insurance Claims

If you’ve had some damage to your roof, you may be wondering if you should make an insurance claim.

The first thing to note is that every insurance company and every policy is different. The key is hiring a roofing contractor who can work with you through the process regardless of what it looks like.

At Andrews Roofing, we are experienced in working with clients and insurance companies for roof damage that has been caused by the frequent storms we get in Hampton Roads. Not all roofing companies work the same way, but here’s a bit of insight into how we help our clients work through the damage, insurance claim and repair or replacement process.

Roof Repairs

Depending on the extent of your repair needs, we may send an estimator out to take a look first. If it’s a few blown off shingles or nail pops, we can likely give you an idea of the cost over the phone and then schedule a repair at that time. From there, you can file a claim with your insurance company. We will provide you with a detailed and professional invoice to submit with other required insurance paperwork.

If a repair is major or requires partial replacement, we may send an estimator out to take a look first. Armed with a written estimate, you can reach out to your insurance company first to see what may be covered under your policy. Although we generally do not need to get involved first-hand with your insurance representative, we are happy to do so if it helps with the process.

Roof Replacements

If it is clear that your roof needs to be replaced, we will send an estimator out before providing any quotes on work or pricing. Our sales department will schedule an appointment with you to inspect the inside and outside of your roof. They will discuss options and budget before providing a written estimate for you to review. At this point, we highly recommend reviewing this estimate with your insurance representative. Some companies may only pay for a one-for-one roof replacement. This means that if you choose a different material, it may not be covered. It’s also critical to know whether the insurance company will cover any portion of the replacement if your roof is older and beyond its predicted lifespan. They may determine that the roof failed due to its age, rather than damage that is otherwise covered.

Roof Warranty Claims

If your roof is fairly new and has sustained damage, it’s possible that you have a manufacturer warranty on the materials. Ideally your roofing contractor will have talked to you about the warranty of the materials you chose and provided you with information on making a claim. For instance, one of the products we offer to our clients are CertainTeed shingles, which carry a wind warranty of 110 to 130 mph. As long as they are installed property per the manufacturer specs, clients shouldn’t need to worry about paying for any storm damage out of pocket. Keep in mind, you may first need to reach out to the warranty provider, then contact your roofing contractor to perform the warranty or replacement.

The Bottom Line

Before you ever need repairs made to your roof, make sure you understand your homeowners insurance. Talk to your rep to ensure your roof will be covered in the case of a storm or other natural disaster. Understand what their claims process looks like. When damage does happen, reach out to your insurance company as soon as possible and document everything. And, of course, only use a licensed, insured roofing contractor who is experienced in both roof repair and replacement and who can provide a professional written estimate, manufacturer warranty information and great service.

The Importance of Roofing Certifications

Commercial roofing requires a specialized set of skills for long-lasting protection. Whether you’re looking for a contractor to install a new roof or provide prompt commercial repair services, find out why you should choose a contractor who is up to date with the latest certifications.

Quality Control

A certified contractor is an experienced contractor. Having certification proves that your prospective commercial roofing team has the skills and experience necessary to get the job done. From safety certifications to certified installers of particular roofing materials, each act as a quality control system to ensure you receive nothing but the best.

Variety of Services

Ask about the multiple certifications that a roofing contractor may have. Having a range of certifications typically means that they are qualified to perform a variety of tasks. From TPO repairs to emergency servicing of flat or traditional shingled roofs, certifications can indicate that a particular team is experienced in installing and repairing any roofing material you need.

Confident Warranty

Many roofing materials require a certified installation team in order to enjoy their generous warranty. Other contractors provide their own additional warranty as part of their commitment to excellence. Either way, a certified commercial roofing expert can offer you longer lasting, and more confident warranties to protect your commercial investment.

An uncertified contractor typically offers little to no warranty for their work, but they also may void any manufacturers’ warranties on the building materials. Be sure to ask about any relevant warranty before your roofing team begins their work.

4 Tips for Extending Your Commercial Roof Life

One of the best ways to ensure you don’t have to replace your commercial roof anytime soon is to take good care of it in the meantime. Replacing a roof can get expensive and time-consuming. Fortunately, there are some things you can do that will extend the life of your commercial roof.

  1. Frequent Inspections

You won’t know what to repair if you don’t take a look every now and again. While inspecting the roof, you should look for cracks, holes, and other similar damage. Sunken areas, whether pooling water or not, also indicate damage. During your inspection, check for clogged drains and clean the debris out of gutters. If your roof has other debris and branches on it, clean that off as well.

  1. Prompt Repairs

Whether you’ve noticed the need during an inspection, or you’ve found a leak inside, it’s important to promptly repair any problem areas. By taking care of them now, you could save yourself money, time, and the hassle of a complete roof repair in the future.

  1. Hiring Professionals

It might be tempting to save a few bucks and just take care of your roof inspection and repairs on your own, but there are some benefits of having the professionals do it.

  • The professionals know what to look for. Something that may not seem concerning to you could indicate a problem that needs fixing.
  • The professionals have the right materials. Some business owners try to fix their roofs using the wrong materials, which doesn’t typically go well.
  • The professionals have experience. Hiring professional roofers could save you time because they have enough experience to get the job done right the first time.
  1. Maintenance Programs

If you’d really like to extend the life of your roof, work with an experienced roofer to get on a maintenance schedule. This takes care of everything mentioned above, in addition to other services, to ensure your commercial roof lasts a while.

The Best Time for a Commercial Roof Replacement

Timing is important in a lot of matters, including comedy, investing, and commercial roof replacement. If you wait too long to replace your roof you could make a number of unnecessary and costly repairs. Even worse, the whole roof could come crashing down on your business. Replacing a roof when it still has good life in it is probably a foolish thing to do. So how do you know when it’s the optimal time for a roof replacement? Although a roof replacement for your business shouldn’t interrupt your operations, there may be times of the year when it is more convenient. Otherwise, the main considerations are the shape of your roof.

Choose the Perfect Time

As with other major business expenditures, there is always the question of repair versus replacement. This is a difficult question, and it’s different for each situation, but the following advice can help.

  • Consult with a qualified roofing contractor. The company can give you the benefit of its experience with roofing matters.
  • Get an inspection and a free estimate. The cost may be less than you expected and favorable financing may be available.
  • Analyze what you have been spending on roof repairs. The annual cost may be higher than what you would pay to finance a new roof.
  • Consider the benefits of a new roofing system. You would have no worries in the roof department for many years.

After consulting with a reputable roofing contractor, and crunching the numbers, you will probably have a good idea where you are. It’s possible you can put off a new roof for a couple of years, which gives you time to save and plan.

Pick the Right Company

The right roofing contractor makes the decision easier. You will get good information from a source you can trust. For assistance with commercial roofing contact Andrews Roofing by calling 757-296-0553 or emailing us today!
